This recap is therefore reconstructed from the monitor's 1–2 July launch catch-up digests, which swept the recent landscape (largely June, with the late-May run-up that sets up June's story). Every item below carries its exact date and a working source link, exactly as captured in those launch digests; nothing has been invented or added from outside them. Read it as a solid reconstruction of the month's arc rather than a day-by-day record — from next month (July 2026) forward, this catch-up will run off a full month of daily coverage.

1) Executive overview

June 2026 was defined by one event and its aftershocks: the US–Iran "Hormuz war" and its 17 June ceasefire. A 60-day MOU suspended US sanctions on Iranian crude, released ~$24bn in frozen funds, secured a no-nuclear commitment and reopened the Strait of Hormuz. The war's energy-price spike had lifted May inflation across South Africa, Nigeria and Türkiye simultaneously; its resolution then pulled oil sharply lower — Brent easing to ~$84 by 1 July and WTI dropping below $69 (its lowest since 27 February). That single swing became the month's central fact: relief for importers (Egypt, Morocco, South Africa, Kenya, Türkiye, Pakistan), a budget problem for exporters (Nigeria, Iraq, the GCC).

Underneath the oil story, Gulf sovereign capital was the connective tissue of the region — Saudi Arabia and the UAE signing an $18.5bn tourism package into Egypt, PIF publishing a 2026–2030 strategy tilted ~80% domestic, and the UAE deepening its US and China investment ties. Political risk was concentrated in two names: Türkiye, where a late-May court ruling unseating the opposition leader spilled into June market and rule-of-law jitters, and Iraq, where a new cabinet still had no 2026 budget and openly debated a dinar devaluation as oil revenue slumped.

The divergence across the book widened. Israel emerged from its ceasefires as the region's outlier — post-war growth ahead of the G7 and a shekel at a 33-year high, strong enough to prompt state aid for exporters. Egypt absorbed the war without breaking its pound, which actually firmed. Central Asia (Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan) kept drawing real money away from the oil-shock noise. And on the league table, Angola overtook Kenya as Africa's sixth-largest economy on IMF 2026 data — the oil exporters climbing back up post-shock.

Southern & East Africa. South Africa drove the story: its first rate hike since 2023 (25bp to 7%, 28 May) as May CPI reached 4.5%, but a constructive backdrop — a sixth straight positive quarter and a Moody's outlook move to positive. Angola overtook Kenya as the continent's sixth-largest economy on IMF 2026 data. Kenya's policy rate sat at 9.0% after six 2025 cuts with sub-5% inflation. FX-regime changes: No confirmed change to any in-scope country's FX regime was recorded during June 2026. The live situation to watch is Iraq, where the government openly debated a dinar devaluation against the ~$5bn deficit (no decision taken in June). 5) Trajectory — what's building

The oil see-saw governs the whole book. Whether sub-$70 crude persists is the single most important variable — a durable importer tailwind (Egypt, Morocco, SA, Türkiye, Pakistan) and a widening exporter fiscal gap (Nigeria, Iraq, GCC). Watch it show up as relief and pressure in the same weeks.
Iraq is the defensive pressure point. Deficit, no budget, and a live devaluation debate make FX convertibility and payment timing real near-term risks.
Gulf SWFs are the region's connective tissue. PIF (domestic tilt), Saudi/UAE (into Egypt), broader Gulf money into North Africa — the most repeated actor across regions; the engagement angle is co-investing on their terms.
Türkiye is a two-factor story. If oil stays down, the CBRT's next move could finally be a cut — but the CHP legal fallout keeps rule-of-law/market-confidence risk live.
Structural bright spots away from the oil noise: Morocco's near-shore battery/auto build-out (H2 commissioning) and Central Asia's investment momentum (Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan).
